State and private medial insurance

When moving to Spain, one of the first things to sort out is your health provision. The European Health Insurance Card will cover you while travelling or for short-term stays, but if you intend to live in Spain you’ll need a more permanent solution.

You have two options: public health care or private health insurance.

Public health care

Not everybody living in Spain has an automatic right to a sanitary card (tarjeta sanitaria Cat Salut), which provides access to public health care. The key requirement for this is a working contract with a Spanish company or being self-employed in Spain (autónomo).

Private health insurance

As with all private health care, in Spain there are many options ranging from affordable to exclusive premium policies. Whichever private healthcare provider you choose, there are a few things to be aware of:

    • Insurance with co-payment (con copago). These are very affordable policies, but each time you attend a doctor’s appointment you pay a percentage of the examination or intervention carried out.
    • Insurance with no additional excess payments (sin copago). For this type of policy you pay a monthly fee and everything is included – this is the option that’s required by the immigration office.
