Student visa

With great universities and fantastic night life, it’s no surprise that the Barcelona area is so popular with students from all over the world. If you’re thinking of coming here to study, Expat Solutions can help with the student visa application process, which can be complex.

What is a student visa?

A student visa allows non-EU citizens to stay and study in Spain, at either a private or a public education centre. It’s important to say that a student visa is simply an authorisation to live in Spain during your period of study and is not a residency permit.

The different types of student visa

There are two types of visa available:

  • A short-term visa. This is ideal if you’re studying for 91 to 180 days in the country.
  • A long-term visa. This is the visa you’ll need if you intend to stay and study for more than six months.

If you’ll be studying in the country for fewer than 90 days you won’t need a student permit – a tourist visa will be enough. Also, EU and Swiss residents don’t require a student visa to study in Spain.

Where to apply for a student visa

Student visa applications can be made at a Spanish National Police station that handles foreign documentation (extranjería), or you can apply at the Spanish embassy or consulate in your home country.
